  Background Information

EXPECTING TWINS, TRIPLETS AND MORE: A DOCTOR’S GUIDE TO A HEALTHY AND HAPPY MULTIPLE PREGNANCY is the “Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy” for women expecting more than one.  Written in a humorous and sisterly tone, it provides accurate medical information while helping the reader to laugh at her unique – and sometimes quite awkward – situation.

One in 32 pregnancies in the United States results in the birth of twins, triplets or more.  Over 125,000 women each year deliver multiples, whether due to the shenanigans of Mother Nature or the intervention of modern medicine.  For many of these women, the discovery that they are expecting more than one conjures nightmares of terrible outcomes and heightens an already shaky sense of security in the medical system.

Dr. Rachel Franklin discovered she was expecting twins during her routine “what is it?” ultrasound at 18 weeks, when she saw two hearts side by side.  Despite practicing obstetrics as a part of her career, she was gripped by the same insecurities and fears as every other woman in her situation.  In her attempts to cope, she began laughing for fear she would cry.

Dr. Franklin went in search of information that would comfort her and help her continue to laugh.  She found little that helped.  Four years later, she has “been there, done that,” and EXPECTING TWINS is her effort to share with her readers the information and enjoyment she had wished to have during her own experience.

Why did you write this book?

Imagine the feeling you might have if you signed up for a dream cruise, only to find once you get to the port that the boat doesn't exactly look seaworthy. You get on it anyway because the tickets were nonrefundable, and you spend the entire time feeling ripped off. All the while you're struck with the worst case of seasickness the doctor has ever seen, you're confined to your bed for the duration, and by the time it's all over you feel completely worn out – but you tell everyone you see at work the next week that it was the best trip of your life, because you're not about to let them think you're a wimp.

When a woman finds out that she's pregnant, only to discover later that she's having twins, she may very much feel like she's been “duped.” Her fear and insecurities may mount as stories of complications are thrown at her by well-meaning friends. She may go to the bookstore in search for reassurance and find little to comfort her. This woman would give anything for a long talk with a girlfriend who has been where she is and has lived to tell the tale. READ MORE

Reviews

Praise for EXPECTING TWINS:
"This is an outstanding book for every woman expecting twins or higher multiples! Everything changes when you're having twins or more. It's scarier than if you're expecting a single baby. Dr. Rachel's book is the answer to a prayer. It is practical, informative, full of common sense and warm reassurance. It's a delight to read. Dr. Rachel wrote this book to make moms expecting twins and more feel as if they can handle this process, calmly and competently, and she succeeds marvelously!"
Susan J. Alt, Editor in Chief TWINS Magazine
- Loved by Parents of Multiples Since 1984 www.TwinsMagazine.com

"I wish this book had been around 23 years ago when we were preparing for the births of our babies. I would have felt much better prepared. I appreciated the down to earth approach to the information. You certainly can’t go wrong in adding this book to your list of “Must Reads.”
- Lynda P. Haddon, Multiple Birth Educator for Canada and host of www.multiplebirthsfamilies.com.

“Finally -- a book about multiples pregnancy that doesn't make you wish you'd joined a convent! It's the only resource I've found that presents the joys and potential problems of multiples pregnancy with a positive outlook and an even-handed approach. Think of it as the "girlfriend's guide" to multiples pregnancy. Overall, it's an excellent resource for anyone expecting more than one, and a godsend for couples like my husband and me, who will be first-time parents.”
